Joy Crookes on her new album Juniper and ‘letting go’ of perfectionism

EWen SpencerJoy Crookes knows a few things about music.
As a child, his father encouraged him to wet the classics from Nick Cave and King Tubby to Poyues and Pakistan to hours.
“This is the end of the world,” he says, “This is the end of the world,” he says, “This is the end of the world.”
Soon he bought his first album (Marvin Gaye’s Whats ISS) and uploaded his first cover to Youtube and stole a cheap guitar he bought in Argos.
His first album, Skin, was released in 2021 and won a Mercury Prize for their spiritual, perceiver ballads. The next summer, Crookes played Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage for the first time and burst into tears on the occasion.
But as a music that swallowed Nme Magazine’s problems as young, he knew what was next: the second album collapse.
Except … never came.
“People think that the scary part of your second album is the article,” he says. “” Oh no, what am I going to say? “
“I always have something for me [expletive] Tell me, so it wasn’t that hard to write.
Getty ImagesWork on his second album Juniper, he started years ago. Fraud Published Demolar And Early sketches Many of them are at the Instagram Feed in 2022, which made the last track list. So it took so long?
“Making sure that the songs come as needed to match song writing, or he says. “This was the difficult part.”
Take the last single Perfect crime. A Serbian, smoky dance track filler finds that Crookes gives him a Pep speech as he prepares to return to the flirting world.
Fresh and funny and slightly on his feet – before he was satisfied, he needed “20 or 30” different shots.
“It is incredibly jollying, but for me, Jank is important, or he says. If it were polished, it would ruin the fun of the song.
“If you pass through individual elements, there are crazy moments that do not make sense – but that’s what brings the song together.”
If this makes it as an obsessive perfectionist, think again. Other songs in Juniper-from the mother who was exposed to the brutal separation to Ballad mathematics-were recorded in a single session.
Paris, closer to the philosophy of the album, allows him to even say himself by choosing himself the honesty of this vocal to a more polished, automatically adjustable alternative.
“While growing, my father would talk about how to ‘allow’ in Van Morrison’s songs – there are moments in him Listen to the lion And Astral weeks just the place where he is free.
“And I think for the first time in my career and just as a person, I let myself get into this record.”
Anxiety attacks
The journey to accept these flaws was rude: Crookes’s second album has a second, sad reason for it to take so long.
The 26 -year -old was always worried, but around 2022, he squeezed his understanding.
After completing the promotion of his first record, he entered what he described as “a very hedonistic stage in my personal life”.
“I had very few self -worth,” he explains. “I was constantly trying to escape from my body and my life.”
During this time, he found himself in a bad relationship, which triggered the bad mental health period that ended for a long time.
“Anxiety has become so important that it has become completely physical, or he says.
“This was not just panic attacks. I couldn’t keep the food below. Everything I did prevented me from vomiting.”
Joy CrookesSome “very interventionist” began to heal with the help of therapy – but it was a difficult job.
The concern was so familiar that “part of my family is part of my friendship group,” he says.
Leaving meant for years of customary behaviors.
A process he said in the last dance: “It’s time to let me go… but it’s hard to leave“.
“The song is especially about vomiting – and how can I not allow [anxiety] Take it so much, “he says.
“So it’s not necessarily, ‘Goodbye anxiety, I can’t have you anymore’ ‘
“More, like ‘I can’t come to the fore because I can’t function physically’.”
The song was a turning point-something he shows by matting the furry with the hairy kylie-esque dance rhythm.
It lists priorities for the rest of the album.
EWen SpencerWhen a person on the fringes of the Crookes team starts to behave in a way to “make others feel insecure”, I know that he will kill, a praise of his manager Charlie.
“Charlie, ‘You know I will kill for you,’ he said.
“I couldn’t look at him because he looked like a diamond,” he adds, he admits that he might be in mushrooms. “I had to get away from him because he was shining very bright.”
He reminded that he had a dark, real friends as well as something. As his support and mental health developed, Crookes began to rediscover himself.
Careful, guitar -oriented someone says goodbye to a suffocating relationship and asks: “Who am I when I am out of your opinion?”
Not only about romantic partners, but about music industry and public perception.
Orum I have been in this sector since I was a child, and I really don’t want to be defined only with music, or he says.
“I want to think that my life has many things. My identity is complicated.”

It is as if to prove, the story of the two best friends who have recently made his film in Ish and an ugly and heavy-fifty police stop and the search tested by the search.
The role took Crookes, a sister’s main character, to the Venice Film Festival, where the film won the popular audience award.
Since then, there have been other movie offers, but Gurinder Chadha’s continuation to bend him like Beckham – in film music, on the screen “or preferably both of them”.
Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley played a deep effect on him when he was a child.
“I mean, it literally addresses brown and altitude of the word – and you can say that it is a lesbian story that should be.
“How am I really interested [the sequel] He gets along, “he says.
For now, Crookes is preparing for the release of Juniper. A proof of his power is not afraid of confrontation with a rich and deep, complexity, but full of heart and humor. The second album was sent to collapse.
Nevertheless, sending the record to the world led to mixed emotions.
“When you overcome such things, you are proud for a minute and you are very upset for yourself the next time, you have gone through such difficult times,” he reflects.
“This is what makes it so euphoric and very upset to publish this album.”
Already the next album will be different. Crookes happy, comfortable, free. A mind condition that he could not imagine in 2022.
“This amazing. I squeeze myself every day. I jokes about things that will definitely lay me two years ago.
“I feel very alive right now and I’m very grateful.”
