Judge orders Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil released on bail

A Federal Judge ordered Mahmud Khalil, a student and activist at Columbia University, to be released on bail after being detained for more than three months.
When Mr. Khalil arrested him in New York on March 8, the US immigration and customs storage was the symbol of the pressure of the Trump administration on universities and foreign students.
Mr. Khalil was an important voice in Columbia’s pro -Palestinian protests last year, and his arrest led to demonstrations on New York and Washington, DC.
According to BBC’s partner CBS News, US regional judge Michael Farbiarz has determined that there is no risk or threat to Mr. Khalil’s community and that it could be released during immigration.
The government did not accuse Mr. Khalil of a certain crime.
It was held by immigration and customs conservation (ICE) under two charges.
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio called for a rarely used portion of the Migration and National Law to claim that Mr. Khalil’s presence in the United States could “potentially give serious negative foreign policy results”.
Last week, Judge Farbiarz decided to detain Rubio that Mr. Khalil was probably contrary to the constitution, and said the US government could not detain or deport the 30 -year -old Legal US government.
Lawyers for the Trump administration said that Mr. Khalil was kept for a different reason and could not explain information when he applied for legal permanent residence in 2024.
Mr. Khalil, who has been held in Louisiana since his arrest, was later detained.
Mr. Khalil’s lawyers argued that the government’s clients violated the rights of free speech. They also asked the Federal Court of New Jersey to release him on bail or transfer him closer to his wife and baby born during his detention.
During the hearing on Friday, which lasted about two hours, Judge Farbiarz, who was chaired by the New Jersey Region, expressed skepticism of the government’s demand for detention of Mr. Khalil.
In addition, Mr. Khalil’s arrest and detention was “quite extraordinary”, he said.
The decision of the counter is preparing the ground for Mr. Khalil to be detained soon.
