Jumping castle survivor killed in tragic New Year’s Eve e‑bike crash

A young survivor of Tasmania Hillcrest Elementary School jumping castle disaster He died in an e-bike accident on New Year’s Eve.
Fifteen-year-old Lucas Reid died after his e-bike crashed into a pole in Devonport, in the north-west of the state, at around 7.30pm on December 31.

Tasmania Police said initial indications were that Lucas’ e-bike crashed into a telephone pole on Dons Head Rd, a rural area on the outskirts of Devonport.
Despite the intervention of surrounding citizens, he died at the scene.
Lucas was hospitalized for weeks and needed a wheelchair after the inflatable jumping castle he was on was lifted 10 meters into the air by high winds during an end-of-year celebration at Hillcrest Primary School. December 16, 2021.
Six children – Chace Harrison, Jalailah Jayne‑Maree Jones, Zane Mellor, Addison Stewart, Jye Sheehan and Peter Dodt – died when a Taz-Zorb inflatable balloon flew into the school oval in what was later described in court as a “mini tornado”.
Lucas’ survival and long recovery was an inspiration to his family and community.
His death has renewed heartbreak for a community trying to recover from the Hillcrest tragedy, as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
