Jury recommends death for Florida man who killed pregnant teen girlfriend

A Florida man who killed his 18-year-old girlfriend and her unborn son after she refused to have an abortion faces the death penalty.

Donovan Faison, 23, was convicted last week of first-degree murder of Kaylin Fiengo, murder of an unborn child and robbery with a firearm. The jury then voted 11 to 1 to sentence Faison to death. he said in a press release Friday.

In 2022, Faison shot Fiengo in the head as he sat in his car at Coastline Park in Sanford. Investigators discovered a bullet casing and an ultrasound image near Fiengo’s body.

At trial, prosecutors said Fiengo sent Faison a photo from their phone with two positive pregnancy messages, and Faison wrote, “Abortion!!!” They showed messages showing him replying.

According to prosecutors, Faison “exploded” at the news of the pregnancy, feeling “angry” and “pressured” because he was living with another woman at the time who suspected him of cheating on her.

When Fiengo refused to terminate the pregnancy, prosecutors said Faison texted a friend, “I’m going to cut it on my brother’s grave.”

Text messages sent later showed Faison invited Fiengo to a meeting in the park, where he shot and killed himself, prosecutors said.

At Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Fiengo’s mother, father, aunt and grandmother made statements to the victims.

“No words can describe the depth of pain of losing your daughter to murder,” said Fiengo’s mother, Sarah Schweickert. “Every day I wake up and face a world that no longer has his smiles, his laughter, his hugs. The grief never goes away; it sits on my chest like a weight that will never go away.”

Faison’s family also testified to the jury and asked for the 23-year-old to be sentenced to life imprisonment instead of the death penalty.

District Judge Donna Goerner will make the final decision on Faison’s sentence at the next hearing on December 5.
