Kamala Harris says she ‘might’ run for president in 2028

WASHINGTON— Former Vice President Kamala Harris said Friday that she is considering running for president in 2028, sending the clearest signal yet that she may try to lead Democrats back to the White House.
“I can do it, I can do it,” he told an audience in New York. “I’m thinking about it.”
The Rev. Al Sharpton asked Harris about her plans during a speech this week at a meeting of his civil rights organization, the National Action Network, attended by other Democratic hopefuls. Some in Harris’ audience chanted “Run again!” he chanted. before Sharpton asks if he can do it.
“For four years, I served a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States,” Harris said. “I’ve spent countless hours in my West Wing office, steps away from the Oval Office. I’ve spent countless hours in the Oval Office and the Situation Room. I know what the job is, and I know what it takes.”
Harris’ loss to President Trump in 2024 was heartbreaking for Democrats, who have since faced persistent questions about the direction of the party and what kind of candidate would be best positioned to retake the presidency.
Democrats have notched some victories over Republicans in recent state-level races as Trump’s popularity declines and they focus on gains in the midterm elections. But even as the party’s popularity grows, the 2028 race will likely be a neck-and-neck battle as the country decides who will replace Trump.
The Democratic primary field will likely be crowded. Other potential candidates, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, also spoke or were scheduled to speak with Sharpton before the conference ended Saturday.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is considering running for president, was not included in the convention program. A recent poll found Newsom would be ahead of Harris by a wide margin among Democratic voters in California for the party’s next nominee.
Whether Harris would seek the nation’s highest office again after a rapid and disrupted campaign in 2024 after former President Biden withdrew from the race has been the subject of speculation for months.
He announced in July that he would not run for governor of California. leave the door open for the presidential race or something else—he later published a book retelling his campaign in September.
On Friday, he said he was thinking about who could do the best job for the American people.
“I’ll keep you informed,” he said.
