Boy, 5, mauled by dog while playing in park in horror attack – ‘Lasting scars’ | UK | News

A 5-year-old child who was attacked by a dog in the park suffered terrible injuries. The teenager was playing in a park on Schofield Street in Mexborough, Sheffield, when the dog, reported to be a bull breed, approached him “aggressively”.
The animal then “began to attack the child’s face, injuring his eye, ears and cheeks.” Police were called to the park where a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerously out-of-control dog.
While the animal was released on bail, it was placed in the police box.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “What was supposed to be an enjoyable experience for a young child turned into every parent’s nightmare. The child was taken to hospital for treatment and it is believed his injuries may have caused permanent physical scarring.”
Inspector Steve Usher said: “This incident should never have happened and could have been prevented through responsible ownership.
“If you are in an area with children who may act in exciting and unpredictable ways, there should be no reason for the dog to be left unattended.
“Being a responsible owner is the difference between dogs causing fear and harm in our society.
“Please do your part and take action. Don’t assume this won’t happen to you and your dog will never do it. Every dog has the potential to cause injury.”
Police warned those walking their dogs:
- Walk your dog on a leash in public areas
- Watch out for other dogs when walking
- Make sure your dog is microchipped and wearing a collar
- Understand your dog’s behavior and adapt your routes
