At least 16 people, including women and children, died and many others were injured as a result of a gas cylinder explosion that occurred in Karachi, Pakistan, in the early hours of Thursday. The incident took place in the Soldier Bazaar area of the city.
Seven of the victims were children, including a two-year-old boy. Rescuers recovered 16 bodies and 14 injured from the rubble; One of the injured was discharged after treatment.
The blast was reported between 4:00 am and 4:15 am on the first floor of a multi-storey residential building in Gul Rana Colony near No. 05 Street near Aga Khan School. It was reported that families were preparing sehri, the Ramadan meal, before dawn when the explosion occurred.

According to Dawn, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and instructed the authorities to provide the best possible medical treatment to the injured.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also expressed his condolences and directed the authorities to speed up rescue operations and safely evacuate all those trapped under the rubble. He also directed the Karachi Commissionerate to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion.
