During an interview on Couric’s “Next QuestionIn the podcast released Thursday, the former “Today” co-host noted how Newsom was described as “slick” and whether that was a reference to his hairstyle. Newsom acknowledged the comments caused him to play a “character.”

“Do you have a ‘Zoolander’ problem?” Couric asked, referring to the 2001 Ben Stiller comedy.

After Newsom started laughing at the comment, he continued: “Are you as ridiculously handsome as Vogue says? No, seriously. What are you going to do about it?”

“You’re not doing anything about it. ‘Cause if you’re going to do something about it, then you’re deceiving people. You know what? That’s who I am. And that’s okay. You don’t have to like me. Or maybe you like a crafty person. I don’t know. Whatever. That’s okay,” Newsom said.

Both Newsom and Couric were mocked on social media for the exchange.

“On his record, he can’t run for President, so they’re trying to fake charisma,” conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller wrote.

Couric’s comments were similar to Vogue magazine’s profile piece on 2028 presidential hopeful Newsom last month, which described the governor as “embarrassingly handsome.”

“Let’s get this out of the way: Embarrassingly handsome, hair covered in silver, pleased with his own dignity as he delivers his final State of the State address,” the opening sentence read.
