Nalanda: A city with a glorious history
The name Nalanda conjures up images of the ancient Nalanda University, once a famous educational institution that attracted students from around the world. Often considered the world’s first residential university, Nalanda continued to attract students from around the world until its decline, which was attributed to a disastrous fire linked to Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji’s troops. It is said that Nalanda University was so generous that it continued to burn for 6 months.
With the rise of Nitish Kumar in Bihar, Shrawan Kumar, a senior minister in his government, won the Nalanda seat seven consecutive times. In 2015, when JDU was a part of Mahagathbandhan, Kumar narrowly defeated the BJP candidate by less than 3,000 votes.
While NDA’s JDU decided to field its MLA Shrawan Kumar, MGB’s Congress party fielded Kaushlendra Kumar.
