Keir Starmer finally has something to celebrate as he goes wild at Arsenal game | Politics | News

The prime minister took responsibility for the “mistake” of appointing his counterpart, who was arrested last month on suspicion of abuse of public office, but denied accusations of a cover-up and said no memos from him had been edited in the so-called Mandelson files. But this week it emerged that Sir Keir had been warned of the “public reputation risk” of sending Mandelson to Washington; this was linked to the financier’s ongoing relationship with Epstein after he was convicted in 2008 of procuring an underage girl.

Despite Donald Trump’s claims, the Prime Minister’s global outlook does not look much better than his domestic prospects, as the war in Iran continues to increase energy and oil bills and there is no end in sight.

While the impact on British wallets depends on how long the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran lasts, analysts suggest oil could reach £2 a liter if it drags into the summer, with energy prices potentially rising by more than £500.

The Thinktank Solutions Foundation said: “If recent increases in oil and gas prices are sustained, around a percentage point could be added to inflation and around £500 to typical annual energy bills.”

The crisis saw the price of a barrel of oil rocket above $100 for the first time in years; Attacks on the infrastructure of major producers in the region have threatened supply and created a real risk of costs exceeding $150 per barrel, or up to £2 per liter for British motorists.
