Keir Starmer is doomed but plotters won’t kill him off for key reason | Personal Finance | Finance

Keir Starmer’s time is up. His days in power are numbered. Now it’s just a matter of time and everyone knows it. The Prime Minister may appear to be purposeful and important, but this is just for show. Every day seems to lead to a new disaster. Growth is stalling (again), inflation is holding steady (again), gilt yields are rising (again), Chancellor Rachel Reeves is making U-turns (again) and poll numbers are falling (again). It’s terrible to watch.
Starmer now presides over something that is out of control, a never-ending nonsense. Nothing he can do or say can reverse this situation. Older voters have seen it all before. Jim Callaghan, Gordon Brown, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak together.
This is not a nice place to find yourself in. Especially if you have a successful career in a more suitable job. Keir Starmer was a senior lawyer, attorney general and head of the Crown Prosecution Service.
Today, the most disliked Prime Minister in history and on Wednesday, Rachel Reeves’s knife-edge Budget will dump another bucketful of mud on her head. Starmer is done, everyone knows it. He should get back to what he does best.
Labor conspirators circle like vultures. Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham is getting active (again). Angela Rayner is quietly plotting revenge. Wes Streeting’s grin is fixed and fake. Even Shabana Mahmood and Ed Miliband might have the chance to change the empty suit that currently haunts No 10.
They all know Starmer is dead standing, but none of them will attack today. From where?
Because whoever takes the crown now will inherit a far bigger mess than the Tories bequeathed to Starmer.
Once the coup is successful, Labour’s new Prime Minister becomes responsible for every fight, crisis, humiliation and mishap that comes our way.
Worse still, they have the terrible knowledge that Labor’s leftists will block the tough action needed to put things right.
The new leader will also be carrying the can of something really bad that will happen to Labor next May. Local elections.
Voters are lining up to throw more mud at Labour. They are angry about the cost of living crisis, rising taxes, small boats and poor local services, and they need someone to handle it.
They won’t hold back just because Starmer is gone. They will empty their buckets with joy, no matter who replaces them.
Starmer’s opponents know they have no time to change course. So they will wait. Let Starmer get wet. Then vacuum and clean. This is so cruel. This is politics.
This leaves Starmer stuck in the same bleak place. In office but not in power; He’s forced to act like he’s still in control while his co-workers smile and sharpen their axes.
The Prime Minister has only one escape route. He can resign. If he leaves before he is thrown out, he might be able to salvage some of his dignity. He should do himself and his family a favor and accept this.
Who knows? Given the quality of those lining up to replace him, we might even miss him.
