“It seemed obvious to me that this should not be done outside parliament, but we were told there was nothing that could be done,” Piper said.

“Most people would assume this would lead to prime ministership. If I knew, he should know too.” [So] To say this was a communication error would be an understatement. “This is a failure to adapt politically to the consequences of something like this.”

Minns said Monday that his office had not received the police decision not to object to the protest, but that the government would work on stronger laws to ban Nazi speech and slogans.

“They use a lot of political intrigue and a pretty clever political banner to hold their racist rallies, so we’re looking specifically at whether the Nazi symbol legislation is fit for purpose,” he said.

Lanyon said a communication error was responsible for the Nazi rally.

“There was an internal communication error,” he told Nine’s programme. Today to show. “We have protests every year. This year we have held over 1,000 protests so far. Last year, we held over 1,500 protests.”
