Kent Street Weir to host Rhymes by the River to teach English, Noongar rhymes

The City of Canning will host its annual Rhymes by the River at the Kent Street Weir in Wilson on Wednesday, January 21 from 9am to 10pm.
The free event targets children up to age five and encourages families to celebrate the city’s diverse communities and highlight the importance of early pre-literacy skills.
Participants will sing and learn a mixture of English and Noongar nursery rhymes, led by local families and Canning library staff.
A light morning tea will be held afterwards.
Mayor Patrick Hall said Rhymes by the River was a great way to promote early literacy and support young families.
“It meets the growing demand for early literacy sessions beyond school holiday programmes, celebrates our diversity and showcases our beautiful community spaces,” he said.
“Most importantly, it emphasizes simple pre-literacy skills that parents can easily practice at home.”
Since it is an outdoor event, participants are recommended to bring a hat, sunscreen and a drink bottle.
