Two die of suspected food poisoning after eating at restaurant in Kerala’s Vizhinjam

Two people from the same family died due to suspected food poisoning in Kerala. The deceased was identified as Shaji (42), a native of Nilamel in Kollam district, and his mother-in-law Rasheeda Beevi (58).
Shaji’s wife was also initially hospitalized at Government Medical College Kollam in Parippally and was later referred to Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to initial reports, the family of six had had dinner at a restaurant specializing in seafood dishes at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram late at night on Monday, February 16, 2026. Four of the six soon developed restlessness and illness and were hospitalized at Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam medical college hospitals late at night.
One person died in Thiruvananthapuram MCH and one person died in Kollam MCH.
Authorities say the exact cause of death (whether it was food poisoning or any allergic reaction) can only be determined after detailed examination.
According to the information obtained, the restaurant is a frequent destination for seafood lovers and many people ate here on the same day.
Restaurant closed
Police closed the restaurant on suspicion that the deaths may have been caused by food poisoning.
The food safety wing will conduct detailed inspections and collect food samples.
