The family of the Briton who went missing while traveling to the World Cup has appealed for help to find him. Michael Hewitt left Leeds for Boston via Barcelona on June 20 but had not been heard from for more than a week, his brother Gary said.

In an appeal on social media, Gary said the family was “very concerned” about Michael’s safety after losing contact with him on June 21. He wrote: “He does not appear to have arrived in Boston and our last contact with him was from Barcelona in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 21. Since then his phone has been out of service and he has not posted any updates on social media. As you can imagine, we are now very concerned for his safety.”

Gary said his brother was known to many as Leeds United superfan “Little Mick” and added that he would be “a familiar face to many White fans around the world who have followed the club home and away for decades”.

The family have appealed for anyone who has seen or had contact with Michael Hewitt since June 21 to contact the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

They said Interpol had been alerted to his disappearance and they hoped to find out soon whether he had gone to the United States or remained in Barcelona.

An FCDO spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Spain and are in contact with local authorities.”
