Royal PR is as much about optics as it is about ensuring the message you want to convey is adequately covered. Whether it’s the King’s commitment to the environment, the Princess of Wales’ determination for people to spend more time outdoors, or the Duchess of Edinburgh’s mission to raise awareness of the prevalence of sexual violence in war.
But this is the obvious implication of a royal engagement, announcement or video; often the most interesting is the subconscious. Take the Princess of Wales’ decision to wear a Victoria Beckham outfit on the day of the release of her strikingly frank and honest Netflix documentary.
It’s a subtle sign of support for a woman who bravely discussed her eating disorder and negative press coverage of her weight. So it was significant that the King and his heir stepped out for a rare joint meeting at the National History Museum last week, amid growing reports of a rift between the pair following Charles’ meeting with Prince Harry last month.

Sources rubbished the claims, stating that the couple “are compatible and their relationship is stronger than ever”; but a photo definitely proves that a picture is worth a thousand words.
Naturally, such events are planned well in advance, and even the best public relations in the world could not have foreseen the rumors swirling about a rift between father and son.
But the way the engagement was choreographed helped reinforce the Palace’s message that the King and his heir are united, both as a family and in the direction the monarchy is heading. They met at the State Bentley before meeting at Buckingham Palace and looked happy to share the stage to focus on their common passion: the environment.
William is following in the footsteps of his father, who is considered one of the leading global voices on environmental issues, by attending COP30 next month.
They were originally planned to attend a summit together, but the King was unable to fit the trip into his busy schedule so the Prince will attend alone instead.
Not only is the COP being held in Belem, Brazil (about 4,600 miles away), but it also falls just days before Remembrance Sunday, when the King will lead the annual ceremony at the Cenotaph.
William is expected to return to London for the ceremony, but is unlikely to return in time for the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall the night before.
Prince William’s powerful message
This week we have seen many powerful messages delivered by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Kate warned that excessive screen time could harm family life; I’m sure we can all agree on this. But the most important message for me was delivered by his wife: “The best way to prevent suicide is to talk about it.”
In the incredibly moving film, which sees the Prince fighting back tears, William aimed to expose the taboo subject in the hope of raising awareness of the devastating impact of suicide. It was a tough watch, I had to take a few breaks because, although I’m a fierce advocate for mental health, it’s not the easiest subject to write about.
If suicide hasn’t affected you personally, it’s easy to have misconceptions about it or be reluctant to talk about it. I know it’s like that for me too.
But by shedding light on the prevalence of suicide and founding a new National Suicide Prevention Network, William is showing everyone that mental health is something that needs to be talked about, and it just might save one life.

Harry and Meghan’s award
While the Royal Family was on the ground supporting charities this week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were accepting the Humanitarian Award in New York.
Many mocked the controversial couple’s new award, but they have become prominent advocates for the impact of social media on children.
This is a topic that scares most parents; How can you control what your children access on their phones and prevent them from encountering harmful content? It is also difficult to monitor and intervene because it takes place on a handheld device rather than on the playground, in the classroom, or at home.
So while it’s important that Harry and Meghan continue to raise the issue publicly, it’s a shame they’re no longer in the Palace machine – imagine the impact they’d have if they teamed up with William and Kate?
Their interest in screens and social media is definitely in line.
Kate and William’s favorite show
There’s nothing better than sitting down and watching reality TV at the end of a long day, and it looks like the Prince and Princess of Wales feel the same way.
They “absolutely love” The Traitors, a well-placed source says, confirming television executive Stephen Lambert’s remarks after Wednesday’s inauguration.
Mr Lambert, founder and chief executive of Studio Lambert, the production company behind The Traitors, said William and his family were “very much looking forward” to the premiere of The Celebrity Traitor that night.
It is understood that in the programme, which aired at 9pm, only the two eldest children, Prince George, 12, and Princess Charlotte, 10, were allowed the “treat” of staying up to watch the show.
