Know about dates, rituals, and auspicious time for shradh

Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraddha Paksha, is a 15 -day sacred period dedicated to honoring ancestors through rituals such as Shradh, Tarpan and Pind Daan in Hindu Moon calendar. In 2025, Pitru Paksha will start on September 7 with Purnima Shradh and will end with Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Amavasya on September 21st.

This period is considered to be extremely auspicious to offer prayer, food and water to the ancestors and seeks their blessings for prosperity and peace. However, it is equally important to know the right time of the day to perform Shradh.

Best time to do shradh rituals

Traditionally, Shradh is done after the sunrise and before the afternoon. They wake up early, have a purifying bath, and then make rituals by offering pinda (rice balls), tarpan (water hikes) and food to the needles or needy people. This time frame is considered sacred because it is believed that ancestors visited the worldly world during these hours.

Special timing for Sarava Pitru Amavasya

The last day of Pitru Paksha is seen as Sarava Pitru Amavasya on September 21, 2025. Today, Shradh can be done for all ancestors, even if certain Tibes have been kidnapped. Astrological Scriptures emphasizes the three auspicious periods today:

• Arctic Muhurat: 12:00 – 12:50
• Rohina Muhurat: 12:50 – 13:39
• Aparahna kaal: 13:39 – 16:09

This time windows are considered to be the most suitable for performing Shradh rituals.

Important issue for 2025

In 2025, Pitru Paksha begins on a coincidence with a Chandra Grahan (Moon Eclipse). Sutak Kaal (ominous period of the eclipse) should not be done shradh. If necessary, the rituals can only be performed after the eclipse is finished and purification rituals are observed.
