The sequel to KPop Demon Hunters has been officially confirmed by Netflix.
The streaming giant has tapped filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to return as part of a new multi-year writing and directing deal with the company.
The original animated film became the most-watched movie in Netflix history when it was released last June as it told the story of K-pop band Huntrix, whose music holds the secret key to demons invading the world.
The film featured the hit song Golden, which won a Grammy last month and was nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards on Sunday (15.03.26).
No date has yet been confirmed for the sequel, but given how long it would take to make an animated project on such a large scale, the previously reported 2029 release seems unlikely.
Kang and Appelhans are believed to be in the early stages of developing the sequel and will turn their full attention to the project, which will be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, once awards season is over.

The streaming giant has tapped filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to return as part of a new multi-year writing and directing deal with the company.
Kang said in a statement: ‘As a Korean filmmaker, I am very proud that audiences want more of this Korean story and our Korean characters.
‘There’s so much more to this world we’ve built, and I’m excited to show it to you. “This is just the beginning.”
Appelhans added: ‘These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home.

‘We’re excited to write the next chapter, challenge them and watch them develop, and continue to push the boundaries of how music, animation and story come together.’
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria commented: ‘With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris have not only reached audiences, but also ignited a global fandom that transcends languages, generations and genres.
‘We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and work with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation to build this universe in a way that will surprise and delight fans everywhere.’
Sony animation heads Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville said: ‘Supporting the bold creative visions of our filmmakers is at the heart of everything we do at Sony Pictures Animation.
“Maggie and Chris brought incredibly different perspectives to this film, telling a story that audiences around the world have embraced.
‘We’re excited to work with them to expand their vision in this next chapter.’
Earlier this year, Kang suggested that the team behind KPop Demon Hunters were resting their “creative minds” for now following the film’s phenomenal success.
The 44-year-old filmmaker told People: ‘There are so many ways we could do this but we haven’t had time to really think about anything, to be honest.
‘Our creative minds are sitting on the couch.’
Of the film’s mind-blowing global success, he said: ‘It was a whirlwind.
‘It was amazing to see so many people celebrating the film and connecting with so many people from all over the world.’
