Krishna Rising Alarmingly

Vijayawada: The water level in the Krishna River rose alarmingly on Thursday night with 5.82 lakh cusecs of water being discharged into the sea from the Prakasam dam. The level of the river is expected to rise to six lakh cusecs by late night.

This was the first time in recent times that the water resources department had issued both the first and second flood warning within a few hours of each other. The first flood alert was issued when the water discharge from the dam was recorded at 3.97 lakh cusecs at 1.45 pm, while the second flood alert was issued at 6.45 pm, when the discharge was 5.67 lakh cusecs. Following heavy rains under the influence of Montha in parts of Khammam district and local catchments in Telangana, many streams and streams, including Munneru, flowed heavily into Krishna, resulting in massive floodwater inflow. Munneru alone diverted two lakh cusecs of water into the river in a short time. Moreover, upstream projects such as Pulichintala and Nagarjuna Sagar have also released large amounts of water into the river. “Currently, one lakh cusecs from the Pulichintala project and 1.46 lakh cusecs from the Nagarjuna Sagar project are reaching the river,” an official said in the evening. Krishna conservator Ravi Kiran said: “Krishna received huge inflow of water from upstream projects and streams in local catchments, resulting in a rapid rise in water level. We expect the discharge from Prakasam dam to reach six lakh cusecs before it starts receding late at night.”Drone saved the boat: In a strange sight, a small trough of sand from the upper reaches of the river was drifting in the swirling waters flowing towards the Prakasam dam. However, at Thummalapalem, this was noticed by SDRF personnel, who rescued the boat and brought it to the shore with the help of drone and local boatmen.High alert: Due to heavy discharge of flood water from Prakasam dam, high alert has been sounded both upstream and downstream of the dam and along the river downstream. Warning: Citizens and fishermen are advised not to enter the river. Water resources, revenues, fire brigade, police, etc. Officials from the departments are on guard along the river bed to prevent incidents such as the breach of the embankments and the inundation of low-lying settlements. Water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu along with senior officials inspected the Prakasam dam and inspected the flood situation. Ramanaidu said that Krishna is swollen due to huge inflow of water from upstream projects like Pulichintala and Nagarjuna Sagar and also Munneru. They expected the discharge from the dam to reach 6 to 6.5 lakh cusecs in the night. Authorities warned those living in the lower reaches of the river to be careful.
