KRMB Writes To Jal Shakti On Enhanced Capacities Of Projects In Krishna Basin

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh’s allegations that Telangana has increased the capacity of some of its projects on the Krishna river and has prepared detailed project reports (DPRs) for the same have been thrown upstairs by the Krishna River Management Board and jal shakti has written to the Union ministry about its role in Telangana’s plans.
KRMB said AP had written to it on December 8, 2025 that Telangana had increased the capacities of projects in the Krishna basin and prepared DPRs without mandatory approval or permission from KRMB, Central Water Commission (CWC) or the hill council.
Seeking advice on what its role is in this matter, KRMB, in its letter to the jal shakti ministry on Tuesday, said it had forwarded AP’s letter to Telangana but did not receive any response even though a reminder was sent.
Although KRMB said it had not received any DPR in line with the CWC’s directions or indicated which projects AP had objected to, it said it wondered what its role was in the matter, especially considering that no project-specific water allocation had been made by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II (KWDT-II) and whether the board would be able to notify any DPR if submitted, with river water allocation still to be decided by the Tribunal.
The bench said KRMB is not in a position to take any decision on such matters as its jurisdiction is currently under the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction and requested the Jal Shakti Ministry to provide guidance on the way forward in case any DPR land is on their table.
Under the AP Reorganization Act, 2014, KRMB’s jurisdiction was limited to ensuring that AP and Telangana adhere to Krishna river water allocations for their projects, and it has no power to decide on water usage or apportion the same to any of the states.
