Senior meteorologist Helen Reid said temperatures were expected to reach a high of 16 degrees on Monday and rainfall was expected to be between 40 and 45 millimetres.

“The weather will be fairly stable throughout the day, but if the gutters are not cleared then … it will become a little bit more problematic, but we’re not expecting any downpours,” Reid said.

“It’s going to be a pretty wet day all around.”

Reid warned people in low-lying areas to be careful, but the lack of heavy rainfall meant flash flooding was unlikely.

“If there are clogged waterways, that can become a problem,” Reid said.

Unfortunately for racing fans, wet conditions are expected to continue on Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday, with up to 10 millimeters of rainfall expected.
