Trump speaks with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham after he takes office

President Donald Trump said Monday that he spoke with Britain’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham, shortly after taking office and described the meeting as “very good.”
Trump added that he and Burnham plan to meet to discuss issues of common interest “in the not-too-distant future.”
During the meeting, the leaders touched on longstanding U.S.-UK relations and the challenges Burnham faces as she takes office, and Trump pledged American support.
“We discussed many topics, including the extraordinary relationship we have with the United Kingdom,” Trump said.

“The Prime Minister has a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to achieve it and of course the USA will be ready to help!”
Trump said the two also discussed North Sea oil, trade, the US-UK military alliance and efforts to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Burnham’s office released a statement following the call, saying the prime minister looked forward to welcoming Trump to Manchester during a future visit.
According to Downing Street, Trump briefed Burnham on the situation in the Middle East, while Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to safely reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Prime Minister outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains and reduce costs for businesses and families across the country,” the UK office said.
Burnham also stressed that defense and security will remain the UK’s top priority, along with its allies.

On the domestic front, Burnham emphasized that he would continue reindustrialization efforts to stimulate economic growth across the country.
Trump ultimately called the meeting a great success.
“The call was interesting and went very well. I wish Prime Minister Burnham GOOD LUCK AND GOD’S BLESSING!” Trump said.

Burnham became Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade on Monday and has vowed to reshape the country, which has gone through a succession of leaders in recent years. He will succeed Keir Starmer, who was prime minister for just over two years after taking office in the summer of 2024.
The two leaders had previously criticized each other. Before Burnham took office, Trump had openly criticized the American president, calling him “extremely liberal.”
