Kurt Russell defends hunting lifestyle and wilderness roots on ‘Table Manners’

Kurt Russell defends his family’s roots in the wilderness.

The 74-year-old actor opened up about his lifestyle and how it shaped his family’s connection to food, admitting that he was “an avid hunter and placed a particular value on venison.”Table Manners” podcast.

When asked if he was sentimental about the animals, Russell said, “I thank them for their service.”

“By the way, there is no pleasure in taking lives,” he explained. “It’s such a pleasure and an honor to get an animal that feeds you. And I respect that, and I respect that. And that means a lot to me. And, you know, I make no apologies.”

Russell’s son, Wyatt, who lives in Colorado, also intervened and explained how different life is in the wild.

“It’s one of those things that we really forget, especially growing up you see my kids running around in your backyard, you see all kinds of animals and they’re amazing.”

“But then when you go to the grocery store, it’s like 90% of the people are in a package,” added Wyatt. “They don’t know. They have no connection to food. And that’s beautiful. You know, we grew up knowing that what you get is what you get for dinner.”

While the traditional wilderness lifestyle worked for the Russell family, the “Hateful Eight” star admitted it’s not for everyone.

“This isn’t something I impose on anyone,” Russell explained. “So it’s not for everyone, but I like to eat my own meat. I grew up in that family.”

Russell’s wild roots can be seen in his career as a Hollywood leading man. The “Overboard” star often plays grounded characters in action, sci-fi or Western movies. With a career spanning over 60 years, Russell has seen nearly every corner of the entertainment industry.

This longevity also gave Russell perspective, although he resisted calling it wisdom. he said AARP she doesn’t find herself sharing wisdom with her four children (Wyatt, Boston Russell, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson).

“God, no. I’m not doing this on purpose, and whatever I’m imparting, I don’t know if it’s intended for wisdom,” Russell said. “After doing this for so long, I know that if you keep your mouth shut and your ears open, you’ll learn some things. With the many experiences I have, I can help us get to where we need to go. So I’m confident in that.”

Russell explained that as he gets older, he doesn’t believe in the idea that “age is just a number.”

“Age is a fact, but it has never been something that has guided my life,” he said. “It’s just like when you’re an actor, your hair color is never the same. The length is never the same. Your face is never the same. Your body language is never the same. Even your age is never the same.”

“And if you do something that you really enjoy, I still don’t feel any different in terms of what I’m doing and the interest and the fun,” he added. “I think our industry is an interesting industry in this respect.”
