Is a shift going on? Political analysts break down Democrat’s win in red House District race

Democrats are celebrating their big victory in a special election that flipped a traditionally red House district blue.

Georgia House District 121 covers most of Oconee and part of Clarke County.

In 2024, she elected Republican Marcus Wiedower with 61 percent of the vote, and in the same election, she voted for President Donald Trump with 56 percent.

But in the special election held Tuesday to fill the seat vacated by Wiedower, Democrat Eric Gisler edged out Republican Mack “Dutch” Konuk by a narrow margin, turning 121 votes blue.

University of Georgia political science professor emeritus Dr. Charles Bullock said: Channel 2’s Richard Elliot Democrats seem motivated.

“This is an off-year election, so turnout is a lot (lower), but it tells us that at least Democrats are perhaps more motivated than Republicans to get to the polls,” Bulloch said.

Georgia Democrats have poured a lot of money into the 121st race: $50,000 and lots of volunteer hours.

“Our momentum is only growing, outpacing Republicans and their strategies to turn this into more victories for the people of Georgia in 2026,” said Georgia Democratic Party Chairman Charlie Bailey.

But Republicans were not ready to accept this idea.

“Democrats took advantage of low turnout and a special election. That’s the story of HD 121. But no single race defines the momentum in Georgia,” Georgia GOP Chairman Josh McKoon said.

University of North Georgia political science professor Dr. Nathan Price agrees, but also adds that Democrats are testing strategies that work for them and that could work in next year’s crucial midterm elections.

“Campaigning is an ever-evolving activity. So as times change, as conditions change, as technology changes, they’re focusing on messaging and trying to get an idea of what’s going to work in 2026,” Price said.

Next month, a House District 23 runoff race will be held in Cherokee County’s normally red district. This race is between a Republican and a Democrat.
