Labelling people of Ladakh anti-national a self-goal: Sonam Wangchuk

Srinagar: Leading climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday said India, unlike China and Pakistan, is respected for its nationalist frontier population and labeling the people of Ladakh as “anti-national” is a “self-goal” that requires introspection.

Wangchuk addressed a large gathering at Gandhi Park in Kargil, where the Kargil Democratic Alliance organized a welcome program for him after his release from prison. Apex Body Leh members, KDA members, Ladakh MP Lok Sabha and LAHDC (Kargil) members were present at the event.

“India is respected for its nationalist population and borders, unlike Pakistan and China, where there are many differences. It is unfortunate that an anti-nationalist rhetoric is being spread against Ladakh. This requires personal purpose and introspection,” Wangchuk said. He noted the remarks of the Ladakh DGP, who referred to him as an “anti-nationalist with links to Pakistan” at a press conference in September.

“I was branded as anti-national and linked to Pakistan. It was sad and surprising. All the allegations were rejected by the court. Now it is their (DGP)’s turn to make a statement. If I am wrong, I should go to jail, otherwise they should sincerely apologize,” he said.

Wangchuk said the dialogue with the Center should take place in a conducive atmosphere and the people of Ladakh should remain united to press for their democratic and constitutional rights.
