Zohran Mamdani appointee resigns over antisemitic social media posts

Newly appointed director of appointments Zohran Mamdani resigned abruptly on Thursday after resurfaced posts on social media showed him making anti-Semitic remarks, according to reports.

Catherine Almonte Da Costa, who was selected to serve in the New York City mayoral administration, resigned after the New York/New Jersey Anti-Defamation League raised concerns about her past online activities.

Posts reportedly made between 2011 and 2012 on a now-deleted account

“His social media footprint includes posts dating back more than a decade that reflect classic anti-Semitic tropes and demean Jewish people.” ADL He wrote to X.

We appreciate that Da Costa has relationships with members of the Jewish community, but her posts require immediate clarification from not only Ms. Da Costa, but also the incoming mayor,” the post said. “I spoke with the mayor-elect this afternoon, apologized and expressed my deep regret for my past statements,” Da Costa said. Judge Street Magazine Thursday.

“These statements do not show who I am. As a mother of Jewish children, I feel deep sadness and regret for the harm these words have caused. I submitted my resignation because this situation distracted me from my work.” he said.

Mamdani accepted the resignation, telling the Judge Street Journal, which first published the posts: “Catherine expressed her deep remorse for her past statements and submitted her resignation, which I accepted.”

Mamdani said Da Costa would be responsible for bringing “the best talent into this administration.”

Da Costa previously worked on the census team in former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration.

In addition to the anti-Semitic remarks, other resurfaced posts revealed derogatory comments directed at the NYPD, including references to “NYPD piggies.” New York Post.

The resignation came less than two weeks before Mamdani was to be sworn in as mayor of New York.
