India’s Tata Electronics has identified Intel as the first potential customer for its upcoming chip facilities, potentially signaling the US chipmaker’s confidence in India’s manufacturing ambitions.

From salt to software The electronics manufacturing arm of the 156-year-old Tata group is investing nearly $14 billion to build its first semiconductor manufacturing facility in India’s Gujarat state and a chip assembly and testing facility in Assam state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pushing India to rival global semiconductor powerhouses such as Taiwan and aims to turn the country into a chip maker for the world despite initial setbacks.

Intel and Tata Electronics will also explore the opportunity to rapidly scale AI computing solutions for consumer and enterprise markets in India, which they say is expected to be among the top five global markets by 2030.
