Labour plots huge Brexit betrayal as Remainers launch disgraceful intervention | UK | News

Remainers are reportedly planning to betray Brexit as they pressure Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to rejoin the EU. It has been reported that there is growing support from key figures in the Labor Party for re-entering the EU customs union.

While the move will make it easier for companies to trade with the EU, it means the UK will have to abandon trade deals it has put in place since Brexit. The move is said to be backed by a number of vocal Remainers, including Alastair Campbell, Tim Allan and Tom Baldwin, who are trying to persuade Sir Keir Starmer.

They argue that rejoining the customs union would stimulate the economy and deliver the growth that Labor has promised. But others in Number 10 are staunchly opposed to the idea, arguing it would leave working-class Leave voters in the hands of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

As reported by TelegramCampbell, known for serving as Former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Director of Communications and Strategy is “fanatical” about rejoining the EU. Meanwhile, Downing Street’s current communications director, Allan, has begun to link Britain’s problems to Brexit.

A Labor insider said: “People are well aware that the new regulations agreed with the EU earlier this year have brought only limited economic benefits. “And you will need to go much further to achieve greater economic benefits.

“Most people until now thought this was politically irreversible, but in terms of economic growth there is now a view that greater integration will bring greater rewards.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who attended the People’s Vote rally and advocated for a second referendum when he was shadow Brexit minister, agreed a “reset” of relations with the EU in May. This included youth visas and fishing concessions; Starmer claimed it would boost the economy by £9bn.

It is claimed that Brexit reduced economic growth by 4%. Remainers also suggest that the majority of British people would support rejoining the EU.

Rejoining the customs union would allow companies to trade more easily with the EU by eliminating checks and tariffs. But it also means the UK can no longer negotiate its own trade deals with other countries.

A senior Labor MP confirmed: “There is an active debate in Downing Street about whether to include rejoining the customs union in the next manifesto. “This would take us beyond returning to the EU regulatory regime.

“I think that would be a huge mistake. It would make the next general election, which is going to be extremely difficult, even more difficult because the traditional Labor voters, many of whom we have lost and who voted to leave the EU, are unlikely to come back if that is a manifesto commitment.”
