Firefighters tackle spectacular blaze at two Glasgow hotels beside iconic nightclub

Fire crews are battling a major blaze near two prominent hotels in Glasgow city centre.

Emergency services were called to Wilson Street shortly after 6pm following reports of a fire, which sent 11 engines to the scene.

Eyewitness accounts and images taken from the scene show that the fire spread to the buildings above the city’s iconic Polo Lounge nightclub.

Two hotels – House of Gods and Revolver Hotel – were named as burning in separate reports.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We received a report on 999 at around 6.18pm.

The hotel is next to the legendary gay club Polo Lounge. The fire broke out less than two hours before revelers were due to attend a sold-out gathering and meet TV drag queen Bailey J Mills at the nightclub.

Homeless Project Scotland said the soup kitchen operating near the fire scene was evacuated as a precaution.

In a statement posted online, the charity said everyone was safe.

He added: ‘For safety reasons the soup kitchen is closed until further notice whilst the situation is assessed.

‘We will share updates as soon as we receive confirmation of reopening or alternative arrangements.

‘Thank you everyone for your understanding, patience and support.’

A statement from Glasgow City Council said: ‘Due to a building fire, Glassford Street is closed to all traffic between Ingram Street and Trongate. ‘Road users are advised to avoid this area.’
