Bail bid for man accused of carjacking spree

A man accused of using an imitation gun while committing multiple car thefts poses a serious danger to the community and should not be granted bail, a court has heard.

Simon Michael Davies, 48, appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday via video link from the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Davies broke down in tears several times during the hearing as the crime he allegedly committed in his hospital bed was read to the court.

The suspect is accused of possessing an imitation firearm, attempted aggravated robbery, assault and threats to kill, which he allegedly used in multiple carjackings.

He is accused of attacking a man at a BP convenience store and trying to steal his Honda Civic, then hijacking a Mitsubishi SUV by presenting a small black firearm.

Detective Sergeant Jeremy Hart told the court that shortly after gaining access to the Mitsubishi SUV, Davies allegedly told the victim: “I’m sorry, I’ll buy you a Lamborghini.”

Following another alleged car theft, he was arrested in a staff elevator at a hotel.

Defense lawyer Felix Best told the court the defendant suffered multiple injuries during the arrest, including a broken arm.

Mr Best said his client had shown particular sensitivity in custody due to his deteriorating mental health.

He said if he was released on bail the hospital would issue a provisional treatment order, which would make Davies an involuntary patient.

“He wouldn’t have been allowed to leave the hospital at that time,” Mr Best said.

But Det Sgt Hart said Davies remained a risk to the community.

Judge Donna Bakos was set to announce her decision on bail Wednesday night.
