Liverpool: I must have done things wrong to upset Liverpool fans

Head coach Arne Slot says he “could have done a lot of things wrong” Liverpool fans will be “disappointed” with their recent form.

Liverpool were booed on Sunday after conceding the 90th-minute equalizer against Tottenham in a 1-1 draw.

Despite winning the Premier League less than 12 months ago, the Reds’ style of play and a string of disappointing results have led to discontent among the supporter base.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said it would be “really difficult” for the Slot to win back fans’ support.

Liverpool sit fifth in the league and face Turkish champions Galatasaray in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday (20:00 GMT), coming from 1-0 down in their first leg of the last 16.

“It’s not nice for them to be disappointed because usually fans don’t get disappointed after you win,” the Dutchman said.

“So first of all, you’re disappointed and disappointed in yourselves that we didn’t win,” Slot said.

“When I came here, people told me that this club was different from other clubs and that they would support the coach for a very long time.

“But if you assume anything then I must have done a lot of things wrong and that’s never a nice feeling, because being at the club it’s always very supportive of the manager in good times and bad, then if they’re not happy with me then it seems I’ve done a lot of things wrong and that’s never a nice feeling.”

He added: “But I also know how the football industry works. Winning can change a lot. That’s what we’re trying to achieve tomorrow night. And we’re fully prepared for it, I can tell you that.”

Carragher claimed Liverpool were a team of individuals but Slot disagreed.

Emphasizing that his players never give up, Slot said, “I agree with many things Jamie said throughout the season. I especially disagree with him on this issue.”

“A team that has given up, a team of individuals or a team that does not work together, does not show resilience after our 120th defeat this season. This is a bit of an exaggeration, but we have been through a lot.”

Slot called on his players to accept the pressure as Liverpool look to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2022.

The Dutch driver admitted that this will be a special moment for him too, as he has not yet made it to this stage of the competition.

“This is the most important game. Because it’s the next one. It’s a little too simple. The most important thing is always the next one,” said Slot. “After Galatasaray, another big match comes against Brighton, two days apart. We feel the importance of this match. We managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. This will be special for me, because it is my first. It will be special for all of us, we can never take the quarter-finals of the Champions League lightly.”
