Longest solar eclipse of the century will happen on August 2: Six minutes of darkness in the afternoon; What’s really happening?

This is not just another eclipse. According to Space.com, “may seem like exaggeration, but the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027 is called ‘eclipse of the century’ for a good reason.”
The path of integrity – the narrow road in which the sun is completely covered – will increase visibility and interest by passing high -populated areas.
It does not happen in 2025
Despite the rumors returning on social media, this event does not take place in 2025. There is no total or partial solar eclipse on August 2 this year.
NASA and other observations confirmed this. On August 2, 2025, the buzzing about “six -minute global dimming” is simply wrong information.
“The world will not be dark in this August,” Space.com says. “If the longest total of the solar eclipse objections of the century are Circle on 2 August 2027, Circle and currently making a trip reservation.”
Why will this eclipse take so long?
This eclipse will be unusual due to the proximity of the moon and the location of the world. That day, the moon will be the closest point to the world in Perigee, which makes it look a little larger in the sky. Meanwhile, the world will be in Aphelion, the farthest point from the Sun, and it will make the sun look smaller. This perfect alignment allows the moon to cover the sun completely for a long time. In addition, the eclipse passes by the equator in which the shadow of the moon moves more slowly along the surface and increases the time further.
Solar Eclipse 2025: Who will see it and where?
The path of integrity will extend to some parts of the eleven countries:
- Southern Spain (Included Cádiz and Recipe)
- Gibraltar
- Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt
- Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman and Somalia
Luxor in Egypt will enjoy the longest integrity in 6 minutes and 23 seconds. Apart from this road, many regions, including Europe, North Africa and most of West Asia, will experience a partial eclipse.
What will happen in India
India’s parts will only have a partial eclipse. Western and Northwest states – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa – will be partly hidden in the sun between 10 and 30 percent.
The eclipse in India will probably take place between 16:00 and 18:00 IST. In some regions, especially in coastal cities such as Mumbai and Goa, sunset may limit visibility. Since the moon will be in Perigee and Earth in APhelion, the visible dimensions of both objects are aligned to produce a longer eclipse – 6 minutes and 23 seconds longer.
Since India is located outside the integrity path, the eclipse glasses will be required during the event. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Vigyan Prasar and India Planet Association are expected to monitor public opinion and live streams.
A great moment for science
The extended time makes this eclipse priceless for scientists. In integrity, over time, researchers may be the following:
- Observe the Sun Coron in detail
- Watch sun cartridges and coronal mass ejections
- Use spectroscopy to examine the outer layers of the sun
- Measure temperature changes and magnetic fields
- Watch atmospheric and environmental changes in the world
These observations will help calibrate NASA’s instruments for future tasks such as Parker Solar ProBub and ESA’s Solar Orbiter.
Solar Eclipse 2025: Do not watch without protection
In India and other areas that experience a partial eclipse, it is never safe to look at the sun without appropriate eye protection. The ISRO approved or ISO certified eclipse glass is a necessity.
Avoid using ordinary sunglasses, mobile phone cameras or telescopes without certified solar filters.
In integrity areas, the glasses can only be removed for the short window when the sun is completely covered. When a sunlight strip appears, the protection should be worn again.
Eclipses in India are religious and cultural importance. Hindu mythology combines the eclipses with Rahu and Ketu – the shaded planets “swallow the sun”. The temples are usually closed during the eclipses and people are washed fast or in rivers as part of ritual observations.
At the same time, increasing scientific social assistance helped to reshape the public’s understanding. Now, many of them are approaching as natural phenomena to be safely observed rather than being feared.
Eclipse is an astronomical coincidence. The moon is about 400 times smaller than the sun, but also about 400 times closer to Earth, which makes it roughly the same size in the sky.
When perfectly aligned, as in August 2, 2027, the result is temporary darkness during the day. But if you’re just standing in the right place.
For most of the planet, life will continue as usual. For those who are on the path of integrity, there may be a landscape for life.
