RBA interest rate decision today; Cory Bernardi recruited by One Nation; Sussan Ley, David Littleproud fail to reach Coalition split resolution
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has failed to directly answer the question about whether Australians can trust the opposition to hold Labor to account given the division in the Coalition and ongoing speculation about the security of its leadership.
At a press conference in Canberra this morning, Ley was asked: “You talk about holding the government to account. How can voters take the Liberals and Nationals seriously when you can’t keep it together and there is ongoing speculation about your own leadership. And why should voters trust you to keep the government?” [to account]?”
Ley responded by saying: “I will continue to give a very strong message to the voters, and my whole team is doing exactly that, because there is a clear contrast among the voters. They have an Albanian Workers’ Party government promising them that interest rates will effectively stabilize and start falling. But in reality the opposite seems to be the case.”
“You’ve got an Albanian Labor government that doesn’t know how hard they’re doing this. You’ve got an Albanian Labor government spending $50,000 a minute on interest on the country’s debt. Very generous, this Albanian government is borrowing money and these debts are increasing and hurting Australians,” he said.
“I’m committed. My team is committed. We’ve got six out of the next nine weeks of parliamentary sessions. We will work hard every day for the Australians who brought us here to work for them,” the Liberal leader said.
