Lostprophets singer dies in UK prison attack: report

Former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins died after being attacked while serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offenses at Wakefield prison in West Yorkshire, sources have confirmed to the PA news agency.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police said: “At 9.39am this morning, HMP Wakefield staff called the police to report an attack on a prisoner.

“Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

“Homicide Squad and Major Investigation Team detectives are continuing the investigation and investigations at the scene are continuing.”

Watkins, once the lead singer of Welsh band Lostprophets, was sentenced to 29 years in prison in 2013 for crimes against children under the age of one.

Lostprophets, which was formed in 1997 and had a chart-topping album with Liberation Transmission in 2006, disbanded after Watkins’ arrest.
