A Louisiana woman’s feeble attempt at diving didn’t end with a swim after she allegedly attacked a sheriff’s deputy responding to a trespassing complaint and then finally surrendered to deputies Tuesday, authorities said.
Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Linville area of Marion in November after a caller reported that a neighbor standing in the driveway was screaming and refusing to leave the property despite being warned earlier, according to the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office.
When a patrol deputy arrived, authorities said the suspect was found naked and swimming in a pond on the caller’s property.
The woman was later identified as Erin Elizabeth Sutton, 41, of Marion. Sutton initially refused to leave the lake or speak to the deputy, telling him she was “trying to be a mermaid.” Sheriff’s office Facebook post.

After repeated commands, Sutton finally emerged from the pond. Authorities said they contacted emergency medical services to assess the situation due to the cold weather.
A blanket was provided, and as the deputy attempted to escort Sutton to a house to warm up, he allegedly assaulted her.
Authorities said Sutton ignored multiple instructions to comply and resisted arrest. A stun gun was used but had no effect, according to the sheriff’s office. Sutton was taken to the ground and allegedly continued to resist, kicking and punching the deputy before being restrained.

Sutton was transported to the hospital for further treatment. Authorities claimed that the woman threatened to kill deputies and paramedics during the transfer.
Because Sutton needed medical care at the time, deputies later requested arrest warrants signed by a judge in Louisiana’s Third Judicial District Court, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sutton surrendered to deputies on January 6, 2025, and was arrested on multiple charges, including three counts of resisting a police officer with force or violence, two counts of public intimidation, two counts of battery on a police officer, disturbing the peace/intoxication, and trespassing.
