Low pressure brewing over Bay of Bengal, Odisha to receive rainfall for next three days: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, October 20, 2025, said that a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours and this may bring light to moderate rain in parts of Odisha over the next three days.
According to IMD’s evening bulletin, “An upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level continues over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining southeastern Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low pressure area will form over the gulf in the next 24 hours.”
According to IMD, the weather system is expected to move in a west-northwest direction in the next 48 hours and intensify into a depression over central parts of south Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.
However, director of meteorological center Bhubaneswar Manorama Mohanty said: “So far, IMD has not predicted any major impact on the weather. The state is likely to experience low to moderate rainfall for the next three days due to a change in wind direction. The rainfall is also expected to be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.”
Mr. Mohanty said the IMD will issue more detailed forecasts of the system after a low pressure area forms over the Bay of Bengal on October 21.
The national weather agency has issued a yellow warning (be careful) for many areas over the next 24 hours.
Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of up to 30-40 km per hour may occur in one or two places in the coastal and southern regions.
Thunderstorms are also expected on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 and Wednesday, October 22, 2025, with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 km per hour at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
