Mahanadi Water Dispute Tribunal Hearing Deferred To August 2

BHUBANESWAR: The Mahanadi Water Dispute Court, Odisha and Chhattisgarh postponed the hearing to August 2 when they started the highest political negotiations at the highest political level to break the dilemma over the sharing of the waters of the river.
Odisha Attorney General (AG) Pitambar Acharya reported the court that both states began to investigate a friendly decision to the dispute through the dialogue between their bureaucracy and leadership. He said that the Odisha government believes that a breakthrough is possible if the issue is approached by the chief ministers of both states with a “positive mentality”.
“The dispute started in 2018, but no sustainable progress has been made for more than seven years. After the recent change of governments in both states, there is now a new political will. Previous efforts were lacking any official or political level, a non -official meeting of the court was held in January this year. The court is in a final presentation.
In recent years, the court has not been active, after the appointment of a new president in December 2024, renewed attention. Justice Bela M. Trivedi took over the role of the former Supreme Supreme Court Justice Am Khanwilkar and gained a new acceleration to the procedures.
Both states are expected to offer an update about their negotiations at the next hearing. The court will decide the future action process based on its presentations.
The Mahanadi dispute, which was centered on the allegation of unilateral water deflection through dams and irrigation projects in the upward flow direction, has been a permanent source of voltage with the Lower Stream Odisha, who claimed that it was deprived of a fair share during the non -Monsoon season.
