The Maharashtra government will issue a special notification banning non-biodegradable plastic flowers and instruct municipal corporations to take action against such markets, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
“Plastic flowers dominate the farmers’ flower market, this should not happen, so a new system will be created and a notification will be issued to take action in this regard. Action will be given to the Municipal Corporation against market vendors and decorators who use plastic flowers,” said Fadnavis, adding that the details of what action will be taken, if possible, will be included in the notification.
Mr. Fadnavis was responding to concerns raised by BJP MLC Sadashiv Khot about the increasing use of plastic flowers affecting the floriculture farmers’ market.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab suggested that vendors using plastic flowers should be given a certain window to comply with the notification.
Earlier, similar concerns were voiced in the state assembly by BJP MLA Vikram Pachpute and NCP SP leader Jayant Patil, who pointed out that it was “destroying the hopes of farmers”.
