Comedian Bill Maher claimed on Friday’s “Real Time” that the U.S. Constitution is starting to resemble the Bible, arguing that “nobody actually reads it.”
“Is the Constitution still a real thing, or is it just a facade? Now the Supreme Court has to decide: Are you going to be democracy’s last line of defense? Or is the Constitution now really, let’s be honest, a sacred, ancient text, like the Bible, that everyone reverently names but no one actually reads or even feels bad about ignoring? I mean, that’s what we do with the Bible, right? We still ignore things by pretending it is. The HBO host said, “it’s the greatest book ever.”
Maher targeted the tariffs that President Donald Trump has implemented since he took office, saying that they are effective in a way and that “it is a very high price to pay to completely ignore the Constitution.”
The comedian says conservatives like to carry around pocket constitutions, likening them to “iPhone user agreements written on parchment.”

“If you say you love this thing but you don’t obey it, you’ve never read it and you don’t care what’s in it, it’s not law anymore. It’s just another Bible,” said Maher, the prominent atheist.
On Friday’s “Real Time” appearance, Maher also criticized the media’s coverage of Trump’s ballroom construction.
“I don’t care about the ballroom. I really don’t care,” Maher said. “I read it; it shows you how the media is, everything is always on one side or the other. [Trump] When I first mentioned it, I was like, ‘Oh my God, he’s disrespecting the White House.’ It was about. Then I finally read: ‘Oh, they’ve done things to the White House before.'”
“I guess it’s just a building,” he added.

In addition to criticizing the media’s coverage of the renovation “one way or another”, Maher suggested that the ballroom might actually be a worthwhile investment, considering that state dinners are currently held “in the tent”.

“Also, after reading about other people, I realized that when they throw state dinners, we don’t have a place,” he said. “They’re doing it in a tent! This is America! So do I care if he’s doing it in the White House? I really don’t care.”
Maher also pointed out that the ballroom was financed with “private money” and not supported by American tax revenues.
