Major £300m UK railway line could be extended after 1m passengers in first year | UK | News

The 29-kilometer line, which reopened on 15 December 2024 as part of the government’s Renew Your Railways plan, has greatly exceeded expectations. The route reduces the journey time from Ashington to Newcastle city center from over an hour by bus to just 35 minutes by train, providing a fast, reliable alternative for commuters, students and local residents.
The line’s operator, Northern, reported that more than 920,000 journeys have been made by the end of 2025, with the one millionth journey expected at the beginning of January 2026. New Civil Engineer notified.
The service currently operates calls to Newcastle and Manors in the city, as well as new stations in Seaton Delaval, Newsham, Blyth Bebside and Ashington. Work is ongoing at Bedlington and Northumberland Park stations and will open in early 2026.
Encouraged by the line’s early success, Northumberland County Council offered funding to extend the route to Newbiggin on the coast.
Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: “The success of the Northumberland Line has far exceeded our expectations and demonstrated that there is a huge demand for rail travel beyond what is currently provided. We want to build on this success and extend the line to Newbiggin.”
The council submitted its priorities to the North East Combined Authority through the Transport for City Regions programme, requesting funding to develop a draft business case for the expansion.
Sanderson said he was “extremely hopeful” the funding bid would be successful.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness praised the line’s first year as “absolutely fantastic” and noted its impact on day trips and student journeys.
He also highlighted that a £10.9 million investment has been made to complete Northumberland Park Station; This will further expand the line’s reach and integrate fares with Metro services.
Operational data reveals the efficiency of the line, as trains have traveled more than 610,000 kilometres, 110 drivers and 84 conductors have been trained, punctuality is 92% and 82% of passengers say they are satisfied with their journey.
