Washington, DC: The White House confirmed on Tuesday (Jan. 4) that the United States is exploring multiple ways to seize Greenland and maintain its interests, including the possible use of military force. This shows how important the Arctic region has become to US policymakers.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that President Donald Trump thinks “acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States” and important to deter adversaries in the Arctic region.

“President Trump has made the well-known case that seizing Greenland is a national security priority of the United States and that deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region is vital. The President and his team are discussing a range of options to achieve this important foreign policy objective, and of course using the US military is always an option at the disposal of the Commander in Chief,” he told CNN. he said.

European leaders jointly responded to Trump’s recent comments about Greenland on January 6, issuing a statement suggesting that security in the Arctic must be addressed collectively.

In the statement emphasizing a unified security framework, “Therefore, security in the Arctic should be ensured collectively, together with NATO allies, including the USA, by supporting the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders. These are universal principles and we will not give up defending them.”

In their declaration, European leaders opposed the proposal for unilateral action, emphasizing that Greenland belongs to its people and that decisions about its future should be made by Denmark and Greenland alone.

Trump’s focus on Greenland came to the fore immediately after the US military operation in Venezuela resulted in the capture of deposed leader Nicolás Maduro. He argued that control over Greenland was essential for national security due to Russia and China’s increasing activities in the Arctic region.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump stated that Greenland is of critical security importance for the United States and suggested that the island has a strategic location at a time when other powers are active in the region.

“We need Greenland. … It’s very strategic right now. Every part of Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships. We need Greenland for national security, and Denmark won’t be able to do that.”

Trump also claimed that Europe supports the idea.

The idea that Greenland is a national priority for the United States dates back to at least 2019, but resurgent interest in early 2026 sparked harsh reactions from Denmark and its partners; leaders warned that any takeover attempt would undermine international norms and damage alliances.

While some US lawmakers and officials have tried to reassure allies that a military invasion is not imminent and that peaceful options such as acquisition negotiations are preferred, the US administration’s statement that military intervention is a possible path has increased geopolitical tensions.
