A major incident has been declared following reports of a sinkhole affecting a canal in Shropshire.

Emergency services were deployed to the scene in the Chemistry area of ​​Whitchurch where a multi-agency response is ongoing.

According to West Mercia Police, there have been no casualties and the fire service is assisting people living nearby. The force described the problem as a pothole and asked people to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was responding to a landslide and confirmed a drain had been affected.

While teams and partners “manage the incident,” he added, “the public is asked to stay away from the affected area for everyone’s safety.”
