Major iPhone software issue causing triple-0 outage, WA Police issue urgent warning to public

WA Police have issued an urgent warning after discovering some iPhone devices cannot call emergency services.

The alert was issued at 1.15pm on Wednesday and a spokesperson said three iPhone models running iOS 16.7.13 may not be able to communicate with triple-0.

“WA Police Force has been informed that some older Apple devices are currently experiencing an issue which may result in them being unable to make or receive phone calls, including emergency calls to Triple-0,” he said.

Devices running iOS 16.7.13, including iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X models, may be affected.

“Users of Apple devices are advised to postpone updating the software on their devices until the issue is resolved,” the spokesperson said.

Telstra said in a statement that they had identified the issue and were working primarily with Apple to investigate the issue.

“We are currently investigating the issue of making and receiving calls, including calls to 000, on older Apple devices,” the telco said.

“We are working primarily with Apple on this issue and will share updates as they become available.

“We recommend that customers using these devices hold off on updating the software on their devices until we confirm the issue has been resolved.”

WA Police have urged anyone trying to reach emergency services to only do so in life-threatening emergencies.

More to come.
