Major UK supermarkets warn of Rachel Reeves’ plans for fresh tax raid | Politics | News

The bosses of two of the biggest supermarkets of the UK warned that Rachel Reeves could threaten the street with clean tax raids. The chancellor is expected to change the current job rates system in the next budget, which is expected to leave the stores and supermarkets with higher tax bills.

Ministers argued that larger businesses will target online retailers and save independent stores. However, Tesco CEO Ken Murphy said that the movement would only add pressure against high streets and city centers. He said: “Increasing the burden on large shops will prevent our city centers instead of helping our city centers. Most of these shops are anchor stores in their local communities.”

Simon Roberts, CEO of Sinsbury, warned that shaking business rates will force big companies to “move away from our high streets”.

Telegraph said: “The proposed changes will increase the negative impact of the job rates further and we will not all want to see, and will not encourage growth or investment to our high streets and businesses.

“The government promised basic reform to straighten the playground, but the changes we hear will not provide it – they will not encourage growth or investment.”

Currys CEO Alex Baldock hit Mrs. Reeves’ suggested changes in their job rates because they “in a hurry”, a warning of knockout effects for retailers who already struggle to survive.

He warned that the changes will “close more stores” and “leave more spaces on the street”.

Mr Baldock said that the shops found themselves in the middle of the “excellent storm” of “extra costs and bureaucracy”, which is “bad for business, investment and growth” themselves. Retail added the boss: “controversial walks in job rates will worse.”

British Chambers of Commerce, employers’ national insurance contributions after the increase in taxes “paralyzed” warned that they are “paralyzed”.

A Treasury spokesman said: “We are a pro -business government that creates a more fair job rate system to protect the street, support the investment and straighten the playground.

“In order to present our manifesto hostage and provide certainty and support to High Street, we are planning to offer permanent tax rates for retail, hospitality and leisure properties since next year.”
