Mali army reports co-ordinated attacks on its positions

A jihadist group assumed the responsibility of a series of coordinated attacks against military duties in Mali.

Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam Wal-Muslimin (JNIM) said in a statement on social media, “coordinated and high-quality attacks on three barracks and dozens of military positions,” he said.

Mali’s armed forces reported a series of attacks in more than one military position in seven towns in the central and western regions of the West African country on Tuesday.

They did not give details about the attacks, or they said who was responsible, and Mali’s spokesman for the armed forces did not respond immediately to the requests for comment.

The events were the distinguishing features of other recent operations of militants who attacked the military positions in Mali and Burkina Faso.

Mali, which has been ruled by a military junta since 2020, has had Islamist rebels for more than ten years, while rebellions led by a longer Tuareg in the north have been fighting its past.

The attacks on Tuesday targeted Diboli in Western Mali, near the Senegal border, and the nearby towns of Yakes and Sandere.

The army said that there were attacks in Nioro Du Sahal and Gogoui in the northwest of the capital Bamako, near the Mauritania border, and Moloodo and Niono in the center of Mali.
