President Donald Trump said Saturday that Democrats who called on the military to defy illegal orders were “engaging in rebellion at the highest level” and “should be in jail immediately.”
This comes after Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, one of the lawmakers featured in the video urging troops to ignore illegal orders, was targeted with a bomb threat just days after the clip and Trump’s subsequent statements recommending the execution of Democrats.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump argued that the “traitors” featured in the video “should be in jail right now, not floating around on fake news networks trying to pass it off as true.”
“It wasn’t like that and it never will be!” he claimed. “It is sedition at the highest level, sedition is a great crime. It is not possible to interpret what he said in any other way!”

Trump first began his video message by saying, “PRODENTAL CONDUCT IS PUNISHED WITH DEATH!” he replied. He also shared a post from another account that read, “George Washington would hang them.”
The White House and the President later attempted to walk back his comments, saying he did not want to execute Democratic lawmakers.
In another post on Saturday, Trump claimed that he agreed with the view of “many major legal experts” that “Democratic traitors who, as president, told the military not to follow my orders are committing a crime of serious proportions.”
Slotkin, who previously worked for the CIA and the Department of Defense, shared video on Tuesday in which he and other Democratic lawmakers who previously served in the military and intelligence community encouraged soldiers and members of the intelligence community to ignore illegal orders from officials.
“This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens,” the lawmakers said. “You all swore an oath to protect and defend this Constitution, just like us. Now, the threats to our Constitution come not only from abroad but also from within. Our laws are clear. You can reject illegal orders. You must reject illegal orders. No one is obliged to carry out orders that are contrary to the law or our Constitution.”

Other lawmakers in the video included Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Reps. Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, as well as Reps. Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire and Jason Crow of Colorado.
Trump administration officials and other Republicans criticized the video, which confirms that refusing illegal orders is a standard part of military protocol.
Slotkin’s office said in a statement Friday that police responded to his Michigan home for a bomb threat, but he was not home at the time.
U.S. Capitol Police told him he would have security around the clock.
“There is law enforcement in front of my house,” he told MS Now. “That changes everything immediately. And the leadership climate is set from the top. And if the president says you should be hanged, then we shouldn’t be surprised if people on the ground do the same thing and say even worse.”

The MPs in the video promised that they would not back down despite the threats.
“Most telling is that the President thinks that reforming the law would be punishable by death,” they said in a joint statement Thursday. “Our soldiers must know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the Constitution and their obligation to obey only lawful orders. This is not only the right thing to do, it is our duty.” they said.
“Fear is contagious in these moments, but so is courage. We will continue to lead and will not be intimidated,” the statement said.
