Man arrested after car allegedly stolen with baby inside in Shepparton

A lawsuit was filed against the man who allegedly stole a car with a sleeping baby in it and left the child in a box in a supermarket parking lot.

Police allege a 32-year-old Mooroopna man stole a car from a car park in Maude St, Shepparton, at around 2pm on November 14, before realizing a 15-month-old baby was inside.

The man allegedly took the child and left him in a box in the parking lot.

The victim ran into the store while the baby was asleep and returned to find the toddler, who was physically uninjured.

Police claimed the man fled the next day in a Volkswagen which was located in Mooroopna.

The alleged car thief was arrested in central Shepparton on Friday afternoon and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and committing a bailable offence.

He was also charged with a number of other unrelated offenses that occurred around Shepparton and Barmah; These included motor vehicle theft, dangerous driving while being pursued by police, and reckless exposure of a police officer to risk while driving.

The man was taken into custody and is expected to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
