Man arrested in suspicion of stealing, watching women shower at UC Berkeley sorority house: police

A Dublin man suspected of prowling a sorority house at the University of California at Berkeley and stealing personal items was arrested by police on suspicion of multiple felonies, the department said Thursday.

On Saturday, members of a sorority in the 2300 block of Warring Street said an unidentified man was seen in the bedroom of one of the residents. The man then escaped through the back door of the house around 6 a.m.

Other sorority women reported seeing the man as early as 3 a.m., according to investigators. When security footage was reviewed, the suspect was seen walking in and out of the house until 6.35 in the morning. At one point, the suspect left, changed clothes, and then returned wearing a ski mask.

During the investigation, detectives learned that the suspect had stolen food and underwear from a resident’s room and also watched women shower in the shared shower room.

Detectives with the department’s Sex Crimes Unit tracked evidence using security video footage and led investigative leads to a possible suspect, Courtney Alford, 45.

Detectives using license plate reader technology allegedly found multiple images of Alford’s vehicle in the area before and after the theft.

An arrest warrant was issued for Alford and he was taken into custody in Castro Valley on Wednesday.

When officers later searched Alford’s home in Dublin, they allegedly found assault rifle parts, high-capacity ammunition magazines and more than 900 rounds of ammunition.

Prosecutors on Thursday charged Alford with burglary, prowling/stalking, invasion of privacy, unlawful entry and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
