Man dies after being shot by deputies while using son as human shield in Paramount, LASD says

A man died Thursday after he was shot by deputies in Paramount while holding his 2-year-old son and his gun, authorities said Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the man’s death in a statement to ABC7. His identity was not disclosed.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the suspect was holding the child in his arm and using him as a human shield at the time of the shooting. The boy escaped unhurt.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Thursday in the 8000 block of Alhambra Boulevard in Paramount. Deputies arrived at the scene after the caller reported that her boyfriend was outside with a gun.

“For more than twenty-five minutes, deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by negotiating for the minor to be released and for the male to give up the firearm,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. he said. “The male refused to comply and then pointed the gun at the deputies, at which point a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The male was struck by the gun and fell to the ground.”

It is not yet known how many shots were fired in the conflict.

After medical teams took the injured suspect to the hospital, he died.
