Man from Prince Edward Island charged as police search for remains of Edmonton woman missing for months in suspected ‘intimate partner homicide’

A Prince Edward Island (PEI) man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with an Edmonton woman missing since August 2025. The suspect was identified as 47-year-old John Angus Joseph MacArthur, according to CTV News. He was arrested March 17 at a home in South Melville, PEI, and extradited back to Edmonton.

MacArthur was charged with second-degree murder and indignity to the human body in the death of Marika “Mika” Sutton. The 29-year-old woman was last seen in the Richfield neighborhood of Mill Woods in early August 2025 and was reported missing to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) by family members from out of province on September 25, 2025.

EPS investigators had determined that Sutton was likely dead by the end of October 2025, CTV News reported.

They said Sutton and MacArthur had a close relationship. During the investigation, police discovered a history of domestic violence; but it was not officially reported to the police. EPS said the woman’s death was classified as intimate partner homicide.

MacArthur’s criminal past revealed

Speaking at a news conference Friday, police said MacArthur has a criminal history in his home state of P.E.I. “He has a criminal history. I believe he has 18 criminal convictions and has been sentenced to prison,” said Det. Braydon Lawrence from the EPS Homicide Unit was quoted as saying to journalists.
MacArthur has been convicted multiple times on PEI for assault, theft, threatening statements and failure to comply with probation, CTV News reported, citing court records.
He was also found guilty of possessing a restricted weapon, robbery, criminal mischief, causing a disturbance, obstructing a peace officer and breaking into his hometown, records show.

Search for Sutton’s remains continues

Police are still searching for Sutton’s remains, believed to be somewhere along the QEII between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe.

“This is a very broad field because we base our information on the information we receive. And unfortunately we can only be as specific as the information we receive,” Lawrence said. According to investigators, Sutton’s body was disposed of between August 22 and 29, 2025.

MacArthur was driving a 2014 black Jeep Patriot with Alberta license plate CFB 2578 at the time of Sutton’s disappearance.
